Update: More Assassin's Creed Valhalla footage has made its way online, this time in the form of a boss fight against some kind of witch. The video's already been taken down, but we got a good look at it.
First off, this seems to be a newer build of the game -- it's not quite as janky as the previous leaked footage. It's also running at 60 frames-per-second, although the button prompts aren't PlayStation -- this is almost certainly the PC version.
Again, though, the big takeaway here is that it looks a lot like Assassin's Creed Odyssey, except you've now got a stamina bar. The fight goes on for around five minutes and the enemy has a huge health bar. As you chip away, numbers come flying out of the boss. This is still very much an action RPG.
This new leak also shows Eivor's skill tree, which strongly resembles the skill trees from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
Our opinion? It looks okay -- but then we really like Odyssey. Having said that, we expected a bigger leap as the series moves into the next generation. This footage doesn't exactly wow since it seems so familiar. But of course, it's always hard to make judgements based on videos alone. We'll have to see how the open world title holds up when it launches later this year.
Original Story: 30 whole minutes of Assassin's Creed Valhalla gameplay has somehow hit the net. The footage first showed up on YouTube before it was swiftly removed by Ubisoft. Since then, it's been reuploaded multiple times, but the publisher's pushing hard to get all of these videos taken down. As such, we don't have an embedded video for you, but if you want to see the gameplay for yourself, your best bet is probably this Reddit thread.
In any case, we'll do our best to describe what we saw. For starters, this footage is taken from an early build of the upcoming open worlder. Animations lack weight, there are missing sound effects, and everything feels just a little bit off. Overall, though, it looks a lot like Assassin's Creed Odyssey.
The gameplay shows main character Eivor travelling across the countryside before taking on a quest where she attacks a fort with a small army. Eivor is wielding an axe in each hand and can throw them at enemies. She also has access to a bunch of special abilities, present in the bottom left of the screen, which are mapped to different buttons just like in Odyssey.
It's hard to really take too much away from this footage, especially since the player doesn't seem to be very familiar with how things work, but it's still a pretty significant leak. We're expecting an official look at Valhalla very soon, at Ubisoft's digital event on the 12th July.

i wonder if this will be the showcase for the game during forward, but obviously more polished.
Oh boy now I'm worried. I want more of Odyssey style, yes, but also I wanted a bit of a jump since this will be on PS5...oh well, I hate cross gen titles
few improvements...new skills, ost seems good, since its work in progress i expect better lighting and facial animations in final product.. it all comes down to narrative since most of stuff is mix elements from last two games hope its good..
@jdv95 I can't see it I watched the whole 30 minutes and its performance wasnt stable. Gameplay wise it was identical to odyssey.
@thefirst Well after watching the gameplay if you liked Odyssey you will like this. Both very similar going off that 30 minute gameplay leak.
Well, it really looks like they just put a viking skin over Odyssey. I got no problem with that actually.
I just hope it won't take 2 life-times of grinding to beat the story. That was my only gripe with Odyssey.
Other than that I loved just roaming around in the game, so I hope I will love it just as much in Valhalla.
I also accepted the fact that AC has nothing anymore really to do with being an Assassin.
Looks really disappointing
Difficult to see what next gen is bringing to the franchise as the game-play could easily be a reskin of the previous game and at 720p, its difficult to tell if its bringing any 'visual' upgrades to the table.
At least its actual 'game-play' at last...
I hope the combat isn't like Odyssey becasuse fights took far too long if you faced a group that were a higher level. Personally I wish combat were less MMO like where if I shot an enemy in head or stab them with a sword then that should go down instantly instead of making bullet sponges to pad out combat. Jedi Fallen Order was bad for that, the lightsabre is meant to be the most powerful weapon in the galaxy yet nearly every enemy could tank a few hits from it. It's something I hope GoT is going to nail where a couple of hits with a Katana should be enough to down any enemy.
@BAMozzy It's not really a next gen title though cos it has to work with PS4 and X1 so they can't go too far. All you'll basically get is a bump in resolution.
Really looks alright to be honest, Viking flavoured Odyssey is what I expected. The RPG elements might not be perfect but the series is so much better for it. Unity and Syndicate were basically trash so the soft reboot definitely revitalised the series.
I really like Assassins Creed games, but this one just isn't sparking any interest for me.
And after watching these leaked videos, I'm probably even less likely to be buying Valhalla, the gloomy setting of Britain in the iron age just doesn't inspire me.
Besides that, I'm Scottish, if I want to watch crap weather and knife fights, I can just look out my window.
Now it makes sense why the trailers were so heavily cg. It looks like more of the same from Ubi.
Well we all knew already its cross gen. People never learn. Idk why some are surprised. It looks good alright.
Sounds very interesting, im a big fan of the first game but when they wrecked the story line with the ending of the 3rd game spoilt it for me , now i just buy these games on sale just dive in and out once every few months. But vikings sounds interesting. loved watching the kirk Douglas movie growing up i can get into this! Thanks for the read.
Man, they already took it down. Oh well, I guess I need to wait for the event.
Super excited for this. Loved Odyssey and just about anything Viking
Really hoping someone in alpha or better yet pre-alpha was playing it and oops forgot he uploaded otherwiseassuming it's actual gameplay footage then its a disappointment.
I sold Odyssey a few days after buying as it was just to grindy for me. I just want to play the main campaign, don't have time to grind out XP and no way am I paying to be allowed to skip. Ezio trilogy and black flag were where I last enjoyed AC. Unity was a disaster, skipped Syndicate and Origins. Tried again with Odyssey and now I'm done with it. Only Ubisoft game I have any interest in the next Watch dogs and that's only cos its set in my home town.
The battle scene looked so unrealistic and boring.
Yep, just watched the leaked footage. Noticed a land full of old Norman ruins a couple of hundred years before they would have been built. But if that was only problem the game would have a better chance. Its a hard no from me unless they remove the grind and even then it will only be a £10 deep sale for a long rainy boring day.
this game is best to buy when its on sale after a couple of months
Sounds like theyre trying to cash in on the god of war formula
Not interested
This is a hard wait till £20 kinda game, looks so bland, boring and uninspired, so basically a Ubisoft title.
Saying that I'm more hopeful for the next titles in the Far Cry and Watch Dogs series, they have much more enjoyable gameplay loops than all AC games post Unity.
Well Ubisoft you just lost my 60 dollars because I expected more from Valhalla for some dumb reason (Maybe I forgot which company was creating this game).
@Gmork___ Does God of War have a formula? I mean, the originals were fixed camera beat em up games and the one reboot was a third person beat em up. If you mean in terms of setting, then there’s only one Norse God of War, it’s not as if it’s about 6 games in and Ubisoft are copying them.
@nessisonett The God of war reboot. Was alot more than just a "beat em up". You're Doing it a disservice there I think.
@DavLFC I’ve played it, it’s a lot better than any Assassin‘s Creed game I’ve played but the only similarities between this and GoW are the fact it’s somewhat Norse. God of War didn’t even have any vikings in it.
Damn this is disappointing, was really hoping for something that wasn’t Origins 3.0. I hope this is an old enough build for them to make some major tweaks, for me the level system just wasn’t for me. I feel it just became a wall of grind before getting onto the main story, as well the return of overpowered abilities is also disappointing. I think an more in-depth combat system like For Honour would of been a better choice. Looks like I’ll be picking this up on sale a while after launch.
Man this is kind of nitpicky but I do not like the, "Follow the line to your destination."
It seems the only thing Ubisoft knows what to do in their open world games is either copy others or just make the world as big as possible with a tedious grind added to it.
Just looks like more of the same with more of the cartoonish combat from Odyssey and the open world just kind of existing rather than being part of the game. At the end of the mission she jumps on a horse and the game says press Y to go to the next objective, this for me sums up Ubisoft's approach to open worlds in general, in that its all disposable and none of it seems like it matters.
Looks like I'm too late. Already gone.
Edit: Just watched it. Yikes, now I see why they didn't show this as xbox game-play lol
So now we're officially into the "bulky musclehead heroines" period?
Cassandra in AC:Odyssey was already a step int hat direction , Abby in TLoU2 was the flag bearer, and we continue with femEivor in AC:Valhalla... I must admit I'm not a fan of that esthetic choice (and don't start talking about realism in a game where you have eagle vision and almost super-powers)
I loved Odyssey. I'm sure I'll love Valhalla.
Everything about this looks uninspiring and bland, even for a work in progress. I also hope those cut-scene animations are better in the final built; the facial work and body movement gives a lot to be desired (but then again, Assassin's Creed isn't really know for their quality cut-scenes animations).
@Olmaz That's the least thing to worry about this work in progress gameplay video. Also, realism or not, she is a viking for god's sake, wtf did you expect her to look, like Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII remake...
@Olmaz It’s a damn sight better than tiny waisted big-boobed ‘warriors’ who wear skimpy armour that exposes their entire body to attack.
I loved Origins and Odyssey so I will love playing Valhalla.
I get why people are tired of the formula but for me the exploration in those games is so addicting.
I'm not digging female Eivor's voice acting. Can we just play as Kassandra again?
I know that everything needs to be so politically correct today, and equal between every gender, but the name Eivor is a female name and nothing else ! Call me old and grumpy (and that I am) but I could never EVER play a viking male called Eivor like my great great great grandmother was named.
Who the heck tricked Ubisoft into thinking this is a great name for both male and female characters is beyond me.
And now I read here that female Eivor's voice is terrible. That makes this game totally unplayable for me to be honest. Why couldn't they just name the dude Erik or some other true viking name ?!!
Edit:
"Eivor, Ejvor or Eyvor is a Norwegian woman's name with unclear meaning, possibly a composition of the words ei which means island and our meaning cautious. It can also be the same "our" / "var" as in the word "farm", the one who is guarding the farm (about dogs). So who is guarding the island. The name has been used in Sweden since the 19th century"
Even more reason to be hyped for Ghost of Tsushima next week 🤠
This is obviously early footage that should never have been made public, but it looks ropey as heck right now. Haven't played an AC game since Black Flag but this looks almost cartoon-like in comparison, in terms of the fighting mechanics at least. COmpletely weightless and robotic. To think there were comparisons being made between this and God of War...

@Agramonte I put a link in
@Grimwood next year we will get HZD forbidden West. Next year'? Right 😉
I’m so disappointed in this. I loved Origins but Odyssey was too grindy. The fights lasted way too long and the voice acting and characters were incredibly campy. I won’t be pre ordering this based on this gameplay.
I dunno about you princesses, but when I punch someone they always fly off into the distance
I really enjoyed Odyssey, I put in 150 hours into it including the DLC.
However I don't think I'm going to repeat the experience in a Scandi setting.
Perhaps this is from a current gen build?
Or dare I say it.... Series X??
@nessisonett Syndicate wasn't trash, I loved the Frye twins and Victorian London was a really interesting setting. It was better than Origins!
I tried to watch the gameplay but I literally started falling asleep because it just look boring AF.
Not sure why some are freaking out over this so much when it is only from a early build? Calm down people, I'm sure it will look loads better come the final release.
One frame per minute 😁 couldn't resist. Looking forward to seeing what it has to offer. Maybe we will see more at the Xbox event.
Yeah, looks like an AC game. So probably not for me.
Don't know what I was expecting after skipping a year. Maybe some evolution of what AC is and whatnot, but this is just AC:O (you can even pick wich O it is) is, the UI is the same, the animations are mostly the same, you even have the freakin' spartan kick skill....
Not really surprised by the comments as it is ubisoft after all. Their software is by just so corporate and lacks originality.
@nessisonett Why is it "better"? You may subjectively prefer a more androgynous type, good for you, but if I'm going to look at a "behind" for 100+ hours, I'll always always chose the one that is beautiful to look at if I can!
@rpg2000 Well, I would expect her to look beautiful, sexy and charismatic... as expected from any piece of entertainment based on fantasy and super-powered people!
And to say that is the least thing to worry is not exactly true imo. I see a lot of wrong things in this leaked footage, but I acknowledge that it's a "work in progress" and therefore anything gameplay based can drastically change until release (the combat, the siege mechanics, etc). But character design and general representation of genders in a game generally don't change that late in development and seeing how Ubisoft has been full cringey and PC these last years, I do not think they will go another route for their female main character...
Well... Assassin's Creed has lost its way. Looks that ubisoft forgot what was this franchise about... sad, so sad... 😢
@Ridwaano Oh wow thanks! gematsu also put up a link for download.
With a bit of help I will not be denied 🙂👍
I watched it last night. Looks like a PS4 game. Just like everything else announced for next gen so far. And before anyone says it yes I know its cross gen.
I had a sigh of relief when I saw that the character movement looked closer to Origins than Odyssey. I still just don't understand why character movement looked sooo bad in Odyssey. It looked like they didn't mo-cap at all. It really pulled me out of that game.
@nessisonett Syndicate still had my favorite character Evie.
I also thought that Syndicate was one of the better old school AC games. Evie Frye was ace.
Honestly, Odyssey was trash made for fans of Dynasty Warriors. Origins were the same garbage but somehow with even worse graphics. Now we push a female lead which doesn't make sense on multiple levels and it's the same garbage as origin and odyssey. At least I can still play all my original games from the series because after Black Flag I don't believe they have made a good game since.
It's a shame, Assassin's Creed used to have unique gameplay that no other game had. Now it's just ripping off Witcher 3 as much as it can.
I was excited for this game but it's gonna take a lot to get me to buy it after seeing this gameplay footage.
Few developers excepted, but not enough 3rd party games are taking risks in creating their own unique gameplay, Ubisoft used to be better at this but with their Battle Royale announcement, constant Witcher 3/GTA copies, and Far Cry's unwillingness to evolve, Ubisoft is at its most stale.
Hopefully now that they have weeded out some of the scum they can hire some creative people and bring these franchises back to what made them special.
@Mixedmutt Women were vikings too, there’s been multiple excavations finding female remains in elite Viking armour. Women were also warriors in Sparta so there’s more historical basis than the whole Garden of Eden schtick and the reliving memories part.
@djlard and what was it about, in your opinion? In mine, its about two groups of people fighting throughout history, all with some connection to an ancient civilization and finding their ancient relics.
It all has to do with genetic memories and people looking into those memories to find the special artifacts. Which every game in the series has kept true to. They've all kept at least one of both of those two groups in them, and most, if not all have has the pieces of eden, and most if not all have mentioned the first civilization. People whine that they're not called the assasins and templars in Odyssey and Origins, but fail to realize that those names have always canonically existed for the first time with the crusades AC1. When the Assassin order, And Knights Templar first came into existence. "Proto-assassin" and "Proto-Templar" are just pathetic ways to whine over nonissues. The facts are the Hidden Ones ARE the assassins. And the Order of Ancients ARE the templars. If you're not talking about story, and you're talking about gameplay, you can still ENTIRELY steal the the series from beginning to end, assassinating every enemy in your way. Odyssey even made it far easier to be an assassin and completely stealthy than origins did. Whining about the "grind" is stupid as hell as its ALL story. Every side quest you do builds the world more, every side quest builds the main character more.
@Tranqbase explain how its a ripoff of the witcher 3? Its literally nothing like it.
@Mixedmutt push a female lead how? You can choose who you're playing with just like you could with odyssey. How does it make no sense? Therewere female vikings.
@Dexeronstarsurge Ok, and where is some "move" in present day story? Where is shown, that you are synching DNA? Where is Abstergo? What they did with data collected during last 3 AC games (synchronizations)? How are main characters connected to present day character? Even if I read all files in present day notebook, there is no clue, why they are doing this. And if we speak about game itself, why you don't kill someone with slything his neck, because he is 2 levels above? Why 4 levels below opponents are not one-hit dead? Where is double assassinations? Where are bonus points for solving situation without killing? Where is crowd hiding? Where is stealth following? etc. etc. etc. My friend, almost everything, what made AC games unique is gone.
The combat is too slow needs to be faster
@tatsumi I read that they took a lot of the grind out of it, so it's back to more skill based gameplay rather than being level locked out of areas or gear, etc. That was a big gripe for me, but I also got a bit tired of the asscreed formula/ generic open world arpg thing. With ghosts of tsushima on the way, I expect this to be perfectly enjoyable, but not a real contender for my attention or cash.
@nessisonett let's not forget the valkyrie, that Gow recently showed us all, were some hardcore, tough-as-nails, warrior gods and exclusively women. Essentially, warriors who recognised other warriors that died in battle and rode them to valhalla on flying horses... Okay, GoW missed that part, but they were still hard as hell!
Lazy trash, sort yourselves out Ubisoft.
Im more into what The Witcher 3 and God of War offered. I thought Odyssey was only ok, actually, it was one of the few AC games I didn’t beat as I got too bored to care. This is not sounding promising to me.
@Spoonman-2 Yup can't wait for some Samurai action! As for this I'll get this when is sub $20 as that is all I'm willing to pay for a Ubisoft copy and paste job. This will also run at 30fps on PS5 so Ubisoft is on full lazy mode.
@Dexeronstarsurge so you can pick, didn't know that's cool but let me get something out of the way. There weren't any f**king Viking warrior women. No one has proved that and only liberal SJW colleges teach that nonsense. Viking men feared the women and the women ruled the town but the men were large, hunters and warriors. This whole women did it too thing is soooooo old and BS, only Irish used women during Rome's invasion after being pushed to the Gaul islands, keep your Kathleen Kennedy the force is female crap out of games.
@Dexeronstarsurge I replied in another message but I state your wrong on Viking women warriors and this just like when SJWs added women to Battlefield Lmfao damn one Russian woman who was a BA sniper and all of a sudden 45% of gun-toting warriors are women what an agenda-pushing inaccurate joke. Viking women ruled the society but rarely EVER battled and sidnt go on raids.
@Mixedmutt I mean there is proof that some women went into battle. There is even mythology of shield maidens. Yes it was mostly men but women did partake in raids and violence and they weren't necessary considered weaker.
I not sure about yall but i really like where the AC games are headed, yes i agree they can spice it up a bit everytime. I loved AC Odyssey not particularly because the gameplay or combat mechanics, but because the freedom, open world setting, and the historical/mythological accuracy it had. The story it told is what hit for me and if Valhalla can give me another im all in
I am not thrilled about this game. Vikings and assassins? Vikings are brutes. Then again, maybe the story is good and somehow explains how a viking became an assassin.
I loved origins, and I wanted to get odyssey, but after watching gameplays(the entire story), nope. It is not an assassin's game anymore. Also, what turned me off were those supernatural mythological dlcs from origins. I finished the original story and the hidden ones, but the mummy(or pharaos) dlc just couldn't hold me.
I will probably just watch for let's plays closely. Then, if I likd it, will get it. For now though, not interested.
"it looks a lot like Assassin's Creed Odyssey"
Awful would be if it looked and played a lot like AC3 Remaster. Odyssey?, that is good news.
Also, if the PS5 version has the fluidity and crispness of Odyssey on PC - 100% worth the upgrade. Playing Odyssey on a PS4 and later playing it on a 2080 - was totally better game play experience.
My only concern is that anything they do I will now be compared with Kass and the TRON Atlantis gear - Hope they have their A game in both sections.
So... for some games it's okay to report the leaks?
The footage is most likely an old demo. Plus, don’t forget this is a cross gen game. So it’s gonna have some downgrade. To expect the graphics to look like ps5/XSX won’t be happening. No game at launch is gonna take advantage of the next power of new consoles until games are made specifically for the next gen.
@Face76
It reminds me of Watch Dogs that all the media were selling as a next gen game for PS4. This time people wouldn't accept the lies and it's the opposite reaction of negativity, (perhaps because it was hyped as next gen gameplay by xbox event) It's just cross gen alright though. I dont remember any outrage for black flag.
@Mixedmutt Okay, so were you equally annoyed when there was a giant snake in God of War since there weren't really giant snakes in Europe? And unless you think the Illuminati are real, you must be absolutely seething at the historical inaccuracy in every AC game. It's certainly far more believable that female Vikings fought in battles than it is that the Norse gods were real like in GoW. I bet you were posting furiously online that there's no evidence for Alfheim actually existing.
@thefirst This looks waaaay too much of a grind for me.
No 60fps again for a console that could surely do it,
£70 for a stamina bar
Looks like Oddysey dressed as Hellblade.
Cant believe I'm saying this but I miss old AC. They felt crafted and intricate, and -most of all - were written well. Syndicate deserves more love.
Also Ubi needs to sort their ambient sound design out. (The arena springs to mind in the last two games.. the quietest crowds ever.)
I’d rather just have an AC2 remaster/remake for PS5 with tightened controls...
@zimbogamer I’m not doubting anything you’re saying but females as physically weaker than males which of course is fact.
How could they then not be considered weaker in battle?
I really enjoyed Odyssey and eventually managed to get the Platinum in May BUT I did start it in early October last year!
Probably on reflection I would agree that it was too big a game, not the map but the amount of actual content.
I haven't seen my leaked footage but it's not that surprising that it would be reminiscent of both Origins and Odyssey.
People used to moan that every AC game was the same (can say that about almost every franchise, no?) so they make some changes and people still moan!
No pleasing some people.
😉
@Col_McCafferty Odyssey's great but this still looks like the same copy-paste. Ubisoft act like they always have a gun to their head to release game after game after game after game, it's a disgrace! Imagine what they could achieve if they took a little bit more time like R* and ND.
@TheArt That's their choice though. Maybe they are happy making merely good games rather than great ones. It does mean they release more during a generation whilst Rockstar have only released one and ND two.
I don't think the main story is ever the draw with AC games anyway, it's the world and culture and the historical setting.
@Grimwood unfortunately I know! Doesn't make me less frustrated
Looks like a wait a year till it's cheap and to be fair, Ubisoft are totally ***** nowadays and cannot be trusted after Breakpoint.
@zimbogamer first off what percentage because a few small bands do not make for this push to act like women fought side by side with men throughout all of the time in large scores. It's an inaccurate depiction of history, again I mention Battlefield being the largest SJW culprit to do this. If you have both genders cool I still think it's a push but whatever. My main issue passed that is Origins and Odyssey was the biggest waste of money and here we are again. Women be including men who give a sh*t it's another Gears 5 it looks to me absolute garbage time.
@Mixedmutt actually bud, there's more evidence that there WERE warrior women, than there weren't. Only a small amount, maybe, but there were warrior woman. Only takes a quick search. Google is really easy to use.
